The first bandanas were printed in the United States in 1776 by a defiant John Henson, who copied drawings of militia flags and cannons that were given to him by Martha Washington, despite a British ban on textile printing. They became one of the first souvenirs of the United States. In the 1970’s the bandana’s popularity surged among cowboys and American blue collar workers.
